A PARTNERSHIP BETWEEN THE U.S. AND KENYA
Rev. Dr. Peter Mageto of Nairobi, shared a dream with Signature School students while living in Evansville, Indiana from 2003-2006. His dream was that there could be a place with books for people to read in the village in which he grew up - Itierio, near Ekerenyo. He had never owned a book. The students enthusiastically raised money, and "The Amani Reading Centre" was built. It was filled with books. And so began "the story" of our work in Kenya in 2006.
Since 2010 we have held yearly or twice a year medical/dental/eye clinics in the Reading Centre, with over 60 volunteers traveling from the U.S. to join Kenyans in medical partnership. We also have provided funds for building a borehole well pumping clean water, and bringing electricity to the villages. Peter's brother Clement has been instrumental in these projects. This year we have begun doing cataract surgery, thanks to the help and vision of Dr. Michel Gelinas of Wisconsin. Also, this year, 2017, 3 students from Signature School are raising money to build a community centre/ medical facility on the hillside behind the Reading Centre.
In 2012 we met Patrick Odoyo of Dago, Kenya, a village only 2 hours from Ekerenyo.
He was living in Evansville with his wife, Susan, and also had a dream for his home village that children would be educated and healthy.
And our story grew! We now have a child sponsorship program for children in the Early Childhood Development classes at Dago - Nursery, Baby Class and Pre-Unit Class
(Please scroll down to read about the program and see pictures of children still waiting for sponsors!)
If you are interested in joining one of our Mission Teams please email Lynn.Renne@aldersgateum.org for more information! We travel to Kenya in February and July for two weeks and include a safari in the adventure.
