CATARACT SURGERY, EYE CARE
BACKGROUND: We have held Medical/Dental/Eyeglass Camps once or twice a year in Ekerenyo, Kenya, since 2010, and Eyeglass Camps in Dago, Kenya, since 2012. We test for reading glasses and prescription glasses, and screen for cataracts. Needless to say, vision care is a very much appreciated ministry.
Reading glasses: We collect over 300 pairs of readers from people who graciously donate them throughout the year, and give out all of them to people who are not able to read because of poor vision.
Prescription glasses: We partner with Holland Kendall Optometry Ministries in Louisville. This company provides us with used prescription glasses that have been measured for strength in each lens. These strengths are then entered into a computer program that allows us to find a good fit for each person, through the use of an auto refractor machine that we take with us to test eyes. We keep 2000 pairs of prescription glasses on site in Kenya, and on the next trip replace all those we have given out. Each camp we give out over 200 pairs.
Cataract Surgery: Over the years we have seen that many people have cataracts, and Dr. Michel Gelinas from Wisconsin is helping develop a cataract surgery program in a our new Amani Health Centre. Fundraisers have raised money for equipment needed, and a local Kenyan eye surgeon has been trained with the new instruments and is now doing surgery in the Health Centre.
